A Meditation on the Rich Young Man

The story of the rich young man in Mark 10:17–27 invites us to examine the priorities of our hearts as we grow in our relationship with the Holy and Gracious Mystery. The man’s question—“What must I do to inherit eternal life?”—reveals a longing we all share, yet Jesus responds not with rules but with invitation: “Come, follow me.” When Jesus tells him to give up his possessions, it is not a condemnation of wealth itself, but of the attachments that keep us from freedom and love. This story shows that spiritual growth requires more than obedience; it asks for surrender, for placing God and compassion above comfort and security. To encounter the Holy is to let go of what possesses us so that our hearts may be filled with what truly matters—grace, trust, and love.
