Speaking of God: the Blog

Let me tell you about a conversation I keep having. Maybe you’ve had it too.

Someone—usually in their twenties or thirties, sometimes older—pulls me aside after a talk or sends me an email. “I can’t do the God-stuff anymore,” they say. “I’m done with religion. But...” and here’s where it gets interesting, “...I can’t shake the feeling that something matters. That there’s more going on. That beauty and justice and love aren’t just, you know, evolutionary accidents...” (from Tripp Fuller)

For many of us, the old view of God is dying. That male god, living out beyond the clouds somewhere, moody, angry, keeping track of our sins, and liable to punish at will. A god who wants to be praised and begged.

And related to that, the idea that religion is mostly about getting your beliefs right so you can go to heaven when you die, is a tough pill to swallow. And the reduction of spirituality to either blind dogmatism or political expediency is, frankly, disgusting to many.

This view of God and religion is dying, yes. But what is being born to take its place?
