Does Genesis Use Literal or Figurative Language?

It is important to understand that the story in Genesis about Creation, sin, and God’s gift of life is figurative — a sacred narrative meant to reveal truth, not a scientific report. The purpose of the story is to help us choose a deeply loving and moral way of life, to recognize our human frailty, and to trust that God’s grace is greater than our failings. It is highly unlikely that creation unfolded in six calendar days, yet the truth behind the story is timeless: that all life flows from God’s creative love, and that this same divine hand continues to shape, guide, and sustain us even now.

In this excellent article, the author helps uncover the Genesis story as a faith story.
